Pomperaug District Department of Health, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of CT, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Oxford Pubic Schools, and the Oxford Local Prevention Council, are sponsoring a community forum at Oxford High School on April 24, 2018, in response to the opioid crisis sweeping the state. Free and open to the public, the forum, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, is facilitated by a panel of subject matter experts and includes candid presentations by local families who’ve suffered the loss of a loved one due to substance abuse.

As part of National Groundwater Awareness Week, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) is reminding Connecticut residents with private wells to consider testing their wells to ensure safe water quality. Water plays an essential role in everyone’s life. Approximately 23% of Connecticut residents: roughly 820,000 people rely on a private well as the source of their household water.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the Pomperaug Health District would like to remind people about the importance of protecting themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The Pomperaug District Department of Health will sponsor a Skin Cancer Screening on Wednesday, May 17th, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Health District office, which is located at 77 Main Street North, Suite 205 in Southbury. This program is free. The skin cancer screening is meant for people who are not under the care of a dermatologist or who have not had their skin examined. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the Pomperaug Health District at 203-264-9616, extension 0.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) announced today it has been involved with an investigation concerning a multi-state outbreak of six confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes. Patients sickened in this outbreak were reported from Connecticut, Florida, New York, and Vermont and range in age from 0 to 89. Two of the six cases have died, one of which was a Connecticut resident. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local officials, has identified Ouleout cheese from Vulto Creamery of Walton, New York, as the likely cause of the outbreak.
